Buying a Pram Newborn
Parents and caregivers can count on pushchairs and prams to be multi-functional and versatile. They’re the co-pilots in the new journey of your child.
A pram newborn is a must for infants and newborns. It comes with a an incredibly sturdy, deep carrycot with soft and safe walls.
A pram is equipped with a bassinet. However, it can be converted to a stroller when the baby is ready.
Safety
Newborns are incredibly fragile and must be protected as much as possible. Buying a pram or stroller with safety features will ensure that your baby is safe and secure during travel. A stroller or pram must include a break that is working and a 5-point harness (2 shoulder straps; 2 waist straps; and the crotch belt) and a wrist tether for the person driving it. Be sure that the model you are considering meets these standards before you purchase.
Find a pram which allows your baby to travel in the position recommended for lying flat. This position helps your baby and prevents the risk of a dangerous spinal curve that can lead to spinal issues. It reduces the risk of SUID (Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Syndrome) or asphyxiation by ensuring that the airways are open. The majority of prams that can be used from birth will have a seat unit that will recline to a lay-flat pram mode for infants and transform into a pushchair unit for older children.
The suspension on a pram is important because it affects how smooth the ride. A pram with lots of spring suspension will be more expensive, but it is worth the extra cost when you intend to use your pram every for a while or more.
Always read the instructions and look at the warning labels on your stroller or pram. When not using it, keep your compact stroller away from dangers such as bicycles, traffic or other people. It is also a good idea to remove any bags or items from the handles as they could cause your baby to be caught or suffocate.
A stroller or pram should never be left unattended with a baby inside even if they are asleep. They could get squirming into the pram and become trapped, or it could roll away and cause injury. Hanging bags, or other items from the handles is not a good thing as they can fall and hit your child in the head.
Comfort
It is essential that newborns have the option to lie flat, as this promotes lung and back development. A lot of prams come with a carrycot or cocoon that creates a warm nest-like atmosphere for your newborn and can be easily removed from the frame. Other models, such as the egg2’s bucket-style seat do not recline to lay flat, but provide a comfy ride for your baby.
Some prams have a separate seat or bassinet for infants. This lets you easily switch between sitting and sleeping positions based on what your baby needs. It is often described as a “travel system” and is the first setup you should test out with your newborn.
Find a pram that has two shoulder straps (ideally cushioned) and a five-point safety harness that fits your bub’s body safely. Be sure to check for gaps, or loose areas, where fingers could become trapped. Also, make sure that the buckles are safe for older children to operate. It’s also worth considering whether you’d like a parent facing pram or not – it’s perfect to keep an eye on your little one and helps them feel reassured by the familiarity of their parents.
Our testers with parents enjoyed the features of some prams, like the Graco Near2Me that lets you raise your baby and lower it at the touch of a button. This is an excellent way to keep connected to your baby, especially when they’re sleeping. If you’re in the market for a travel system, make sure to check whether the frame is compatible with the car capsule you’ve chosen and this will prevent the need to wake them up when changing between car, pram and back again.
Convenience
It is important to consider your baby’s transportation needs when you purchase a new baby’s pram. Some prams have the option of a carrycot or bassinet that allows your baby to lie flat (essential for their spinal development and breathing) while others come with seats that recline into a flat position. It’s important to check out the other accessories the pram has, such as an infant changing bag and a footmuff that are essential to keep your baby warm during colder months.
It’s worth noting that certain strollers and prams can be transformed into best travel pushchair systems, permitting you to connect a car capsule with the frame via adaptors so that you can move your baby between the car and the pushchair without having to awake them. These can be useful if you have a busy lifestyle or don’t have a sufficient space for a pram capsule, although it’s important to keep 3 in 1 pram mind that your child will need to be old enough and able to sit independently before you can switch between the car capsule and pram.
Our tester’s mother found that the ability to raise or lower the seat of her son’s 10 months old was a fantastic feature. One example is the Graco Near2Me, which lets your child ‘glide up’ to you with the touch of the button.
Finally, make sure your baby’s pram has a sturdy base with wheels that are able to handle potholes and bumps. Ensure that you are able to fold it up easily and make sure the safety harness is in good working order and fits comfortably (five-point rather than three-point) and is adjustable as your child grows. You should also be able to store shopping and changing bags inside the basket beneath (although keep in mind that loading the pram with too much weight can cause it to tip over). If you’re not sure which to choose, test various models at the local store.
