Upgrade components
Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armors trinkets, weapons and gathering tools to provide them with an additional bonus to their attributes, or an additional effect, while they are being used. They can be obtained through crafting, purchased from vendors or on the trading post, looted, or received as a reward. Some upgrades can also be equipped with special cosmetic effects. Upgrade components are divided into two categories: universal and restricted to a specific type. Universal upgrades, like gemstones, can be used on any equipment. Type-restricted improvements, like inscribed items, must be put on specific kinds of equipment to gain their benefits.
The majority of upgrade components can be retrieved from equipment that they are currently mounted in, however certain components can only be salvaged using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool. Ascended armor and legendary gear may also contain upgrade components that can only be retrieved with a Black or Ascended Salvage Kit. Upgrades that are inserted into an item can’t be substituted with upgrades of the same type, except for glyphs which are able to be swapped out and out of gathering tools.

Glyphs are defined by Unicode which assigns a code for each symbol and allows them to be used in various fonts. Certain glyphs are available in multiple forms, such as swashes or small caps. Others have a single form, for example, the capital letter A. The Glyphs panel has a search box that lets you sort by the name of the glyph and its CID or GID or Unicode value. You can also use the context menu of an glyph to create a new character or edit the glyph.
The context menu in the Glyphs Panel lets you select a font that will be used for glyphs within a set. You can also choose to keep a font in mind with an additional glyph. The Glyphs Panel shows the fonts available when a glyph is associated with more than one font.
The glyph metrics in a font can affect the layout of text. For instance, a glyph may have an advance width that is the length of space it occupies from its beginning point to the end of the font. The glyph could also have side bearings which are white spaces on the left and right sides of the font. These side bearings, also referred to as kernings, affect the way that the glyph appears in the document.
Glyphs may be upgraded in the Nightmare Dungeons at an Upgrade Altar. Each Nightmare Dungeon has a specific duration of time that must be completed, and after that the Glyph Upgrade altar will appear. The altar allows players to spend the Glyph XP they’ve earned by playing the dungeon, and it will increase the number of the nearby Paragon Board nodes in its radius.
Each glyph has its own primary stat as well as secondary stat bonuses that can be added to the hero’s total. These bonusses can assist you in deciding which glyphs you want to upgrade and where to put them on the Paragon Board.
